Skin Tags

Skin tags, scientifically known as acrochordons, are small, soft, and typically flesh-colored growths that protrude from the surface of the skin. They are composed of collagen fibers and blood vessels and commonly occur in areas where the skin folds or experiences friction, such as the neck, armpits, eyelids, under the breasts, or in the groin area. Skin tags vary in size, ranging from a few millimeters to a centimeter or more in diameter.

Treatment Options:

  • Observation: In many cases, skin tags do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns. If the skin tags are not bothersome and their appearance does not bother you, our dermatology experts may recommend monitoring them periodically for any changes.

Removal Techniques:

  • Excision: This procedure involves cutting off the skin tag using sterile scissors or a scalpel. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic before the removal. Excision is a common method used for larger or more stubborn skin tags.

  • Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the skin tag, causing it to fall off. Cryotherapy is a quick and relatively painless procedure commonly used for smaller skin tags.

  • Cauterization: This technique involves using heat or electrical current to burn off the skin tag. It is typically performed after numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Cauterization is effective for smaller tags and helps minimize bleeding.

It is important to note that skin tag removal should be performed by a qualified professional to ensure safety and minimize the risk of complications. Have your doctor send our clinic a referral to get the process started!
