Sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. A sclerosing agent is injected directly into the affected vein, causing the vein wall to swell, stick together, and gradually fade as the body reabsorbs it over time.

The procedure has been used for decades and is widely regarded as the gold standard for treating superficial leg veins. It is safe, effective, and requires no general anesthesia or significant recovery time.

Conditions Treated

Pigmentation and Sun Damage:

Larger feeder veins that supply spider veins — typically blue or green in color and visible beneath the skin. Treating reticular veins alongside spider veins helps prevent recurrence and improves overall results.

Spider Veins (Telangiectasias)

Small, web-like clusters of red, blue, or purple veins visible near the surface of the skin — most commonly on the legs and face. Sclerotherapy effectively reduces their appearance by collapsing the affected vessels.

Small Varicose Veins:

Twisted, enlarged veins that appear raised or bulging beneath the skin surface. Sclerotherapy is effective for smaller varicose veins that do not require surgical intervention.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

A fine needle is used to inject a sclerosing solution (Tromboject) directly into the targeted vein. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vessel, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Over the following weeks, the treated vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body and fades from view.

Blood flow is naturally redirected to healthier veins, with no disruption to overall circulation.

The Treatment Process:

  1. Consultation During your consultation at Q Dermatology + Aesthetics Centre, your provider will assess the location, size, and severity of your veins and determine the appropriate treatment plan.

  2. Treatment The treatment area is cleaned and a fine needle is used to inject the sclerosing agent into each targeted vein. Sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes depending on the number of veins being treated.

  3. Post-Treatment Care Compression stockings (20–30 mmHg) should be worn immediately after treatment and for several days following. Walking is encouraged to promote circulation, while strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas, and prolonged sun exposure should be avoided during the initial recovery period.

What To Expect During And After Treatment

During Treatment Most patients experience mild discomfort — a slight stinging or cramping sensation at the injection site that resolves quickly. The procedure is well-tolerated and does not require anesthesia.

After Treatment

  • Compression: Wear compression stockings (20–30 mmHg) continuously for 24–48 hours, then during the day for 3–7 days depending on the vein type treated.

  • Bruising and Redness: Mild bruising, redness, or raised areas at injection sites are common and typically resolve within a few days to weeks.

  • Vein Darkening: Treated veins may temporarily appear darker before fading — this is a normal part of the healing process.

  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients return to regular daily activities immediately after treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.

  • Sun Protection: Avoid direct sun exposure to treated areas during recovery to prevent post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Important: If you experience sudden swelling, redness extending beyond the injection site, or signs of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) such as significant leg pain or warmth, seek medical assessment promptly.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

The number of sessions required depends on the extent of the veins being treated. Most patients see noticeable improvement after 2–4 sessions, with results continuing to develop over several weeks as the body reabsorbs the treated vessels.

Sessions are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart to allow for full healing and assessment of results.
