What are Moles?

Moles, also known as nevi, are common growths on the skin that typically appear as small, dark spots or bumps. They are made up of a cluster of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. Most people have between 10 to 40 moles on their body by adulthood, and they can develop at any age.

While most moles are harmless, it’s important to monitor them for any changes that could indicate skin cancer, particularly melanoma, which often starts as a new mole or a change in an existing mole.

Types of Moles

Common Moles (Benign Nevi):

These are the typical moles most people have. They are usually round or oval, with a smooth border, and a uniform color (brown, black, or tan).

Size: Usually smaller than 6 mm in diameter (about the size of a pencil eraser).

Location: Common moles can appear anywhere on the body.

Atypical Moles (Dysplastic Nevi):

These moles are irregular in shape and color and may look different from typical moles. They may have uneven borders, multiple colors, and are often larger than common moles.

Risk: Atypical moles may be associated with a higher risk of melanoma. If you have many atypical moles, it’s important to monitor them closely and have regular check-ups with a dermatologist.

Congenital Moles:

Moles that are present at birth. They can range in size and shape and may be more likely to develop into melanoma if they are large.

Junctional Moles:

These moles are usually flat and darker in color, often appearing in childhood or adolescence. They are located where the epidermis (outer skin layer) and dermis (inner skin layer) meet.

When to Be Concerned About Moles

Most moles are harmless, but some changes in their appearance could be a sign of skin cancer, especially melanoma. It's important to check your moles regularly for any of the following warning signs, often referred to as the ABCDE rule:

  • Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other half.

  • Border: The edges of the mole are irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined.

  • Color: The mole has varying colors or uneven distribution of color.

  • Diameter: The mole is larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).

  • Evolution: The mole changes in size, shape, or color over time.

How are Moles Diagnosed?

When you visit Q Dermatology + Aesthetics Centre, our dermatologists will perform a thorough skin examination, looking at all your moles for any signs of concern. If necessary, we may perform a skin biopsy to confirm whether a mole is benign or malignant.

Mole Removal Options

If a mole is found to be abnormal or causing cosmetic concern, mole removal may be recommended. Common methods of mole removal include:

  1. Shave Excision:

    • Description: The mole is shaved off at the skin’s surface using a special surgical blade. This method is often used for raised moles.

    • Recovery: Minimal scarring is usually involved.

  2. Excisional Biopsy:

    • Description: The mole is completely removed along with a small margin of surrounding skin. This method is often used for larger or suspicious moles.

    • Recovery: This may involve stitches and a small scar, but it allows for a thorough examination of the mole.

  3. Laser Removal:

    • Description: In some cases, lasers can be used to remove moles, especially smaller, benign ones. This method is generally used for cosmetic reasons.

    • Recovery: Minimal scarring and quick recovery.

  4. Cryotherapy:

    • Description: In certain cases, moles may be frozen off with liquid nitrogen, although this method is less common for deeper moles.

Aftercare Following Mole Removal

Following the removal of a mole, it’s important to care for the area properly to ensure proper healing:

  • Keep the area clean and dry.

  • Avoid sun exposure on the healing site.

  • Follow-up with your dermatologist to ensure proper healing and check for any signs of infection.

Preventing Moles and Skin Health

While some moles are genetic and unavoidable, there are ways to reduce the risk of developing new moles:

  • Sun Protection: Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30, avoiding tanning beds, and seeking shade when the sun is at its peak.

  • Regular Skin Checks: Perform monthly skin self-exams to monitor any new moles or changes in existing ones.

  • Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure: Limit time spent in direct sunlight, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM when UV radiation is strongest.
